The QE2 Sprint Triathlon took place on Sunday 5 June with competitors all racing to take advantage of the final chance to book their place in the GE Great Britain Age Group Team for the 2011 Beijing ITU Sprint Triathlon World Championships.

In the women's race, local 26-year-old Emma Pearson claimed the victory recording the second fastest run of the day to finish in a time of 1:13.32. Natalie Batey finished second in 1:17.05, just 22 seconds in front of Mary-Ann Elkington who posted the fastest bike split of the day finishing in 1:17.27.

The men's race looked like a formality with local athlete Ben Newman leading the swim and bike, before sadly having to pull out through injury on the run. With Ben's withdrawal, the door opened for Alan Copland, who was sixth out the water and second fastest on the bike to deliver a blistering run to snatch first place overall in 1:03.52.

Colin Stevenson finished in second place, in a time of 1:04.51, with Fergus Roberts in third with a time of 1:05.16.

Last weekend also hosted the Shropshire Triathlon, the second of three qualifiers for the 2011 Beijing ITU Triathlon World Championships.

Darren Milne won the men's race in a time of 1:58.28, with David Garner exactly a minute behind in second with 1:59.28. Lee Harper finished in third place with a time of 1:59.57.

Anna Turvey won the women's race in a time of 2:06.48, with Hannah Shooter in second with 2:11.23. Eleanor Haresign finished in third place with a time of 2:15.27.

Qualification for the 2011 Beijing ITU Sprint Triathlon World Championships is now complete, but there is one opportunity left to qualify for the 2011 Beijing ITU Triathlon World Championships. The next qualifier takes place at Dambuster Triathlon on 18 June, which doubles as the British Triathlon Championships.
