Bishop leads haul of British bronze

Tom Bishop spearheaded a successful weekend for the GE Great
Britain Team at the Aguilas ETU Triathlon U23 and Youth European
Championships in Spain this weekend. Tom won the first of three
bronze medals, that included two in the relay events.
Bishop lined up for the U23 championship alongside twin brother,
David Bishop, and a strong international field including
Olympian Richard Varga, Spanish stars, Mario
Mola and Fernando Alarza, and strong
Russians Andrey Bryukhankov and Denis
Vasiliev.
The course saw the athletes take on a 1,700m sea swim, slightly
longer than usual, followed by a 41.5km cycle ride and 10km run. As
expected, Richard Varga and the Russians were the strongest in the
swim, with Tom Bishop just behind.
Bishop managed to ride ahead of the main group, which contained
his brother, who sportingly didn't help chase the leaders. The run
ended in a tight finish between Pierre Le Corre of France and
Varga. Le Corre won by two seconds and Bishop fought hard for
bronze.
He said: "That race was tough, but I enjoyed it all the same. It
was an honest swim, bike, run. I wish the bike could have lasted
another two laps, I was loving it!
"After three kilometres of the run though it was a different
story; more a matter of survival for me, I had blown, maybe because
I'm lacking in race fitness. Still, I'm really happy with third and
the guys who won are very deserving."
In the women's U23 event, Non Stanford and Lois Rosindale
finished fifth and sixth respectively. They then teamed up with the
Bishop brothers in the U23 Triathlon Mixed Relay to win bronze
behind Italy and Russia. The top three teams finished within 20
seconds of each other.
In the youth team relays Britain's women's team of Sophie
Coldwell, Kate Currenand Megan McDonald won an excellent bronze
behind Portugal and France. The men's youth team relay saw Miles
Burton, Greg Chambers and Anthony Haynes finish sixth.
