Continental launch world champion time trial clinchers at Cycle Show
Created On: 28 September 2011
Tony Martin's exceptional winning ride at the UCI World Time
Trial Championships last Thursday has sparked interest around the
cycling world, not just because his dominance, but also because he
rode on clincher tyres.
Challenging the modern tradition that professional testers ride
tubs, Martin rode to a 1:15.83 win over Bradley Wiggins. Now
visitors to the Cycle Show are being invited to see the
revolutionary Continental tyres for themselves, 29 September to 2
October at the NEC.
Martin's World Time Trial winning performance was executed using
clincher tyres, the first time this has happened in the modern
history of the World Championships and this soon-to-be-available
model will be launched in the UK at the Cycle Show.
Martin rode a version of the Grand Prix RS, which was a limited
edition clincher in the German market in 2010. This was also
developed last year with Ironman world record holder Chrissie
Wellington who rode them in competitions all year, proving that
they had not only the speed, but also the reliability to be a world
class competition tyre.
This tyre was recently launched at Eurobike in its official
aftermarket guise, namely 'Grand Prix TT'. It features the latest
and fastest version of the exclusively German made Black Chili
compound and the ultra fine 300tpi nylon casing and Vectran anti
puncture breaker. The tyre will go on general release in the UK in
January 2012, as a limited edition special.
Continental will also be exhibiting a broadened 29" MTB program,
bringing across many of the award winning tyre models from the 26"
range, namely the Mountain King and X-King in German made
ProTection and RS models. These tyres contain all the premium
technologies from the German Korbach factory, which has been
producing bicycle tyres for well over 100 years.
A new cyclocross clincher, CycloX-King makes its debut as a 32mm
mud option, again in the RS (Race Sport) format which features the
revolutionary Black Chili compound, as does the Grand Prix Classic
700x23 race tyre. This uses a tread design pattern and brown
sidewall colour scheme from 1982, but with all the modern
technologies beneath, ideal for the increasingly common retro
builds.
A new line of cycle clothing will also be on display, as will a
new tyre merchandise display for trade customers. Visit stand
G63.
