Lisa Picton has revealed her frustration after being forced to retire from Sunday's Ironman UK 2011 in Bolton.

The Liskeard-based triathlete was pulled out of the race for medical treatment at the 15-mile mark of the run, having achieved personal best times in the swim and the bike.

Picton, 36, was well on course for a top placing as she entered the run leg, but it all went horribly wrong as she suffered an uncontrollable bout of retching not long after the final transition.

She said: "It all started well with a PB in the swim and a PB on the bike but, once I started on the run, I was having episodes of violent retching and could not take on any fluid at all.

"By the time I got to 15 miles, I was staggering and ended up being pulled out for medical treatment and was on a drip for two hours, therefore not finishing. I don't know what went so horribly wrong.

"A couple of days before the race I had a sore throat and my glands were up so maybe I wasn't 100 per cent and the intensity of the event found a chink in my armour.

"I have had retching issues before so I really need to find out what isn't agreeing with me, or what it is that I am getting wrong. Normally, I can still run through it but that wasn't going to happen on Sunday."

It could have been so different for the Cornish star. Picton completed the 2.4-mile swim in 1:03:49, before finishing the 112-mile bike ride in 6:05:21.

She is now recovering at home in Liskeard, before planning her next race.
