Jameson and Faux win Outlaw

Joel Jameson won the Outlaw Triathlon in Nottingham with new record time of 8:47:47. He had a close tussle with Hywel Davies, who finished less than five minutes behind. Catherine Faux from Sheffield won the women's event whilst Gi Tri Bridgetown won the relay.

Joel's winning time shaved fourteen minutes off his own best time over the distance, set in Lanzarote in May. The 28 year old from Loughborough established a small lead over his closest rival, Davies, during the 3800m swim. Davies caught Jameson during the 112mile bike ride and the pair swapped the lead, trying to share the effort in windy conditions.

They exited the second transition together, with Davies having a slight lead at the start of the marathon. Jameson took the lead and opened a gap before suffering with cramp and allowing Davies to close on him. However, Jameson kept his focus and claimed the win.

He commented: "I watched the Outlaw last year and seeing what a great course it was, I decided to take part this year.

"I've not been training as much as I'd have liked because I got married last month and spent two weeks on honeymoon. The lack of training made it really painful at times and I had to really dig deep to pull a win out of the bag. Ultimately, I was happy with the win, but my time could have been better."

Joel's brother, Toby and new wife, Catherine, joined forces with Tom Lowe as part of the winning Gi Tri Bridgetown relay team - ensuring that the Jameson family had a successful day. The winning team just missed out on breaking eight hours, finishing in 8:01:10, including an impressive 4:21:32 bike split from Tom Lowe.

Toby, 30, said: "I'm really pleased to be a part of the winning team today. Collectively, the team today were really strong.

"It's the first time I've taken part in the Outlaw and it's been exceptionally well organised. It rivals other big events in the country and I would definitely take part again".

Catherine Faux, aged 23, who is originally from Stamford but currently studying medicine at Sheffield University, was the first woman to cross the finishing line today. She said: "I'm really happy to have won, I wasn't expecting it, but I've been trying to train as much as possible around university so all the effort has paid off. I've never done an iron distance before and I was using a borrowed bike, so it feels amazing to finish in first place.

"There were so many supporters out on the route today and the other competitors were all really supportive which made such a distance when the going got tough. I'm already thinking about next year, I'm definitely planning to take part again."

Faux's time was around 23 minutes faster than the course record from last year. With new records in the men's, women's and relay events, the Outlaw 2011 proved to be even faster than its award winning debut last year. The date for the 2012 event has already been set as 1 July 2012.
