Race Report: Derwent Water Open Water Swims

Following the cancellation of the first in the XTERRA Epic Lakes Swim Series at Coniston in May, organisers were delighted with the success of the second race at Derwent Water, Keswick, which took place on Sunday 19^th June 2011.

Whilst the weather wasn't as glorious as hoped for, the scenery was with a magical effect created by the misty weather and mirror-like lake. It certainly didn't stop nearly 500 swimmers lining up to tackle distances ranging from 500m through to a full Iron-distance 3.8K course.

With great support from Carlisle canoe club, swimmers took to the water to warm up with a spectacular rendition of "Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes", complete with actions, before getting under starters orders.

Teen Spirit was in strong supply as the podium was dominated by youngsters in both the 500m and classic mile. 14year old Ally Wright took the 500m male top spot in an impressive 6:06 with top female, 17year old Robin Goodfellow finishing in 7:23.

Nearly 250 swimmers finished the classic mile event, with 17year old Beau Smith finishing first in 21:16. 16year old Grace Randles took victory in the female race with 23:16.

Finally 170 swimmers stepped up to take on the challenge of 3.8k, a good chance for prospective Ironman competitors to check their progress. Dan Craigen took top honours being the only swimmer to go under the 50min mark with a time of 49:25. Michelle Tenwick won the women's event in a time of 56:46.

The series moves on to Ullswater on Sunday July 10^th before finishing with the re-run of the Coniston event on Sunday 14^th August. Orders for sunshine have already been placed.
