Race Report: Horwich Triathlon 2011

Created On: 03 May 2011

Marc from Epic Events has been in touch with a report from the rather windy Horwich Triathlon which took place on Sunday 1st May:

Thanks to everyone who turned out to help make Horwich Triathlon another great race in the Epic Events calendar.

The 11k run route had to be curtailed because of a major fire near Rivington, leading to the closure of Sheep House Lane but everyone admirably hid their obvious disappointment at a shorter run route. To describe the race as windswept would have been rather an understatement.

After the 800m pool swim, the high winds and sharp corners meant riders had to be very careful on the 40K cycle ride. With huge crosswinds battering racers on the climb out of Horwich and Belmont, there were probably a few who may have questioned opting for disc wheels.  There were one or two spills with some nasty road rashes as a result, but most managed to get round the course relatively unscathed. Even the flat plateaus were hard-going thanks to ceaseless gales, making it a little harder than usual to enjoy the gorgeous scenery.

Even though it was shorter than planned, the run still proved testing, more so with the wind. One competitor was completely blown off his feet as he made his descent from the Pike, leaving him with a rather nasty knee injury.  But in true Epic Events style he still hobbled back down to transition and made sure he crossed the finish line before he let the St Johns Ambulance team get him cleaned up.

Even though it was tough going, everyone still returned to the finish line in high spirits and expressed their enjoyment of the race.  Richard Anderson, who took first place at the Parbold Duathlon, continued his winning streak to cross the line in 1:50:57.  Louise Kelly won the women's race with a time of 2:10:41.  There were 241 finishers in total.

Results are now online HERE  and photos of the event can be viewed at www.sportsunday.co.uk

The team are already looking at making next year bigger and better but for those who can't wait that long the first of the XTERRA Epic Lakes swim series takes place at Coniston Water on May 29th with the Darwen Triathlon on 5th June.
